What to Do on Bonaire Besides Diving.

Bonaire is known around the world for its diving, and for good reason. But you certainly do not need a diving certification to fall in love with the island. Some of our favourite days on Bonaire are actually spent above the water. From windsurfing at Lac Bay and kayaking through the mangroves to exploring the national park or simply heading out on the water for the afternoon, there is much more to discover. Spend a day at Sorobon and Lac Bay

On the southeast side of Bonaire, Lac Bay is one of those places you should experience at least once. The shallow turquoise water and steady trade winds make it an incredible location for windsurfing, whether you are experienced or trying it for the first time. Sorobon is also perfect if you would rather take it slow. Spend a few hours by the water, have lunch nearby and simply enjoy one of the most beautiful parts of the island.

Kayak through Bonaire’s mangroves

For a completely different view of Bonaire, head into the mangroves of Lac Bay. Guided kayak tours take you through narrow waterways surrounded by mangrove trees, with opportunities to learn more about this important ecosystem along the way. It is peaceful, beautiful and a wonderful way to experience a side of the island you would otherwise easily miss.

Explore Washington Slagbaai National Park

If you have a full day available, Washington Slagbaai National Park is well worth adding to your plans. The landscape here feels completely different, with rugged coastline, cactus-covered hills, beaches, viewpoints and plenty of wildlife. Bring enough water, leave early and take your time. The journey through the park is very much part of the experience.

Get out on the water

You can experience the Caribbean Sea without ever putting on a dive tank. Take a sailing trip, visit Klein Bonaire, spend the afternoon snorkeling or book a private yacht charter. A sunset cruise is another favourite. Watching the sun disappear into the Caribbean Sea from the water is a beautiful way to end the day, especially with family or friends.

Meet Bonaire’s donkeys

Bonaire’s donkeys are part of the island’s history, and the Donkey Sanctuary provides a safe home for hundreds of them. A visit is easy to combine with other activities in the south and is especially fun when visiting Bonaire with children.

Or simply slow down

Not every day on Bonaire needs an itinerary. Book an in-villa massage, enjoy a long lunch, find a quiet snorkeling spot or stay at your villa for an afternoon by the pool. That slower rhythm is part of what makes Bonaire so special.

At Qvillas, we live and work on the island and are always happy to share our recommendations. We can also help arrange experiences during your stay, from yacht charters and sailing trips to massages, private chefs and other island activities. Planning your stay on Bonaire?
